Fall and winter are prime-time for weeds in Texas. Henbit (Lamium amplexcaule) is a prolific winter-grower. It prefers cool, moist soil so now is a perfect time for it to thrive. Henbit also loves freshly seeded lawns that are not fully grown in and dormant lawns as well.
You’ll recognize it by its upright, spreading growth habit, furry lower leaves and tiny purple flowers in early spring. Henbit usually grows 6-inches tall and 1-foot wide, with purple flowers at the ends of the stems in small whorls.
